Why keep your step data off the cloud?
Short answer: Keeping steps off the cloud means your history lives only on your phone, with no server holding a copy. PrivateSteps works this way. The trade-off is no automatic sync, which export and import cover: save a file, then bring it onto a new phone.
Why people choose it
Cloud storage is convenient, but a copy of your daily habits then sits on someone else's computer. Some people simply prefer fewer copies in fewer places.
- Nobody else holds your history
- Nothing to hack or leak from an account that does not exist
- You decide when your data is moved, and where
This matters most when the numbers are personal. Many of us log more than steps, and we would rather those entries stayed at home.
If you do track other numbers, it is always worth talking to your own doctor or care team about them.
What changes when data stays on the phone
PrivateSteps has no account, no cloud, no sharing and no internet access of its own. Your reports, goals, records and streak are all drawn on the phone from data stored on the phone.
Erasing is simple too: one button removes everything, because there is no second copy elsewhere.
The trade-off: no automatic sync
We will not pretend this costs nothing. Your steps will not appear on a second phone or a computer by themselves, and a lost or broken phone takes the history with it unless you have saved a copy.
If that worries you, a saved file is a simple answer. A short habit of exporting now and then means the history is yours to keep, and no one else has to hold it.
How export and import cover it
- Export daily totals or hour-by-hour detail as a CSV file, saved where you choose.
- Keep that file somewhere you trust.
- On a new phone, import it. It merges with what is there and never double counts.

Questions
Is my data stored anywhere besides my phone?
No. PrivateSteps keeps it only on the phone unless you export a file yourself or turn on the optional phone backup.
How often should I export?
That is up to you. Many people export once a month or before changing phones.
How long is history kept?
For as long as you keep it. You can delete older data whenever you wish.
PrivateSteps records and draws your own numbers. It does not diagnose, interpret or give medical advice. Talk to your own doctor or care team about your health.
