Private step counter vs cloud step counters: what is the difference?
Short answer: A cloud step counter copies your steps to a company's servers, usually with an account. A private step counter, like PrivateSteps, keeps everything only on your phone. Cloud brings backup and other devices. Private brings fewer accounts and less sharing.
What cloud sync means
Cloud step counters usually ask you to sign in. Your steps, and often other health numbers, are then stored on a server so you can see them on another device.
That is useful, and many people like it. If you use several devices or want a company to hold your backup, cloud may suit you well. The trade-off is that your information sits with a company, and the app usually needs the internet to do its job.
What staying on the phone means
A private counter uses the step sensor already in your phone and stores the data there. No account, no ads, no analytics, no sharing. The app has no internet access of its own, so it behaves the same in airplane mode. Your reports, goals and records are all drawn on the phone. You can erase everything with one button, and you can delete older data whenever you like.
What you give up
- Automatic viewing on a second device
- Backup that happens for you
- Connections to watches and other gadgets
With PrivateSteps you can export CSV files and import them on a new phone. Phone backup is optional and off by default.

Questions
Is a cloud step counter unsafe?
Not necessarily. Many describe encryption and security. The difference is that your data lives on a server as well as your phone.
Can I use a private step counter on a new phone?
Yes. PrivateSteps exports CSV files and imports them on a new phone, merging without double counting.
Do private step counters work offline?
Yes. The phone's step sensor does the counting, so no connection is needed.
PrivateSteps records and draws your own numbers. It does not diagnose, interpret or give medical advice. Talk to your own doctor or care team about your health.
