PrivateSteps vs Google Fit: which should I use?

Short answer: Google announced in May 2026 that Google Fit is being phased out and folded into Google Health. PrivateSteps is a different, smaller kind of app: a step and health numbers log kept only on your phone, with no account, no ads and no cloud.

What Google has said

That report says Google plans to invite Fit users to migrate their data later in 2026. It gave no shutdown date. Fit's APIs were closed to new developers in 2024.

Where Google is better

Google's tools connect with wearables and offer wider fitness features. We are smaller and deliberately do less: a private step and numbers log. If you are unsure, you can try PrivateSteps free to start, and see the store listing for current pricing.

If you want to keep data on your phone

You can export your daily totals or hour-by-hour detail as CSV, and import them on a new phone without double counting. See exporting step data. Please talk to your own doctor or care team about your numbers and targets. PrivateSteps only records and draws what you enter, and it is not a medical device.
